Brazil: Study reveals 62% of population unaware of HPTEC disease

A survey conducted by Ipsos, commissioned by Bayer, indicates that 62% of Brazilians have never heard of Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (HPTEC). The study, which surveyed 1,000 people across Brazil's five regions, highlights a significant lack of awareness regarding this rare, progressive, and potentially fatal vascular condition.

Among the 38% of respondents who claimed to know about the disease, 81% admitted to having only basic or no knowledge. This lack of understanding often leads to the condition being confused with systemic arterial hypertension. Specifically, 42% of respondents incorrectly believe that systemic high blood pressure is the direct cause of pulmonary obstruction.

Common symptoms identified in the survey include shortness of breath during physical exertion (62%) and constant fatigue (55%). Furthermore, only 33% of Brazilians recognize the impact HPTEC can have on productive life, such as the ability to work or perform basic physical activities. In response to this scenario, Conitec has opened a public consultation to evaluate the incorporation of riociguat into the Unified Health System (SUS).
