Argentina's Milei denied visit to Brazil's ex‑president Bolsonaro
On 18 July 2024 Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes rejected a request by Argentine President Javier Milei to visit former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is serving a 27‑year‑plus house‑arrest sentence for an alleged coup attempt and is confined to his residence in Brasília. Earlier that day Moraes had suspended all social‑oriented visits to Bolsonaro for 30 days, allowing only medical staff and lawyers, after Bolsonaro violated his house‑arrest conditions by circulating a political letter on social media through his son Flávio Bolsonaro. Milei had planned to meet Bolsonaro on 25 July while attending a PL party convention in São Paulo to back Flávio’s presidential bid. Moraes ruled the request “prejudiced” because the broader visitation ban remained in force and also barred any politically‑electoral contacts until the October elections. The decision underscores tightening judicial restrictions on Bolsonaro and limits a high‑profile diplomatic encounter between two right‑wing leaders in South America.
