Brazil Supreme Court gives Bolsonaro 24 hours to explain seized firearm

Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the legal team of former president Jair Bolsonaro to provide an explanation within 24 hours about a firearm seized from his property during a routine police blitz in Taguatinga, Distrito Federal. The weapon, a 9mm Glock with a spare magazine, was reported by the driver—identified as a staff member of the Institutional Security Office (GSI)—as being taken for repair.

Bolsonaro, who has been serving a home‑arrest sentence after being hospitalized for pneumonia, is serving a more than 27‑year term for involvement in a coup‑plot case. Moraes also questioned the Federal District Police command on whether the mandated inspections of all vehicles leaving Bolsonaro’s residence, including official security cars, are being strictly enforced, after the gun managed to bypass security checks.

The court’s demand comes as Bolsonaro’s 90‑day humanitarian‑home‑arrest medical period draws to a close, raising concerns over the handling of weapons and security protocols surrounding the former president.
