Brazil Supreme Court indicts blogger Oswaldo Eustáquio

The First Panel of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has unanimously decided to indict blogger Oswaldo Eustáquio for criminal organization related to the January 8, 2023, anti-democratic attacks in Brasília.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who reported the case, voted to accept the complaint presented by the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR). He was joined by Justices Cristiano Zanin, Flávio Dino, and Cármen Lúcia. The court found that the evidence justifies advancing the accusation to the criminal instruction phase, where evidence will be gathered and the defendant may present a defense.

The PGR accuses Eustáquio of participating in a criminal association at the end of 2022 to oppose the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The indictment alleges that Eustáquio used social media to disseminate messages that encouraged highway blockades, attacks on the Supreme Court, and actions against democratic institutions. Eustáquio, a prominent supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is currently living in Spain and has been a fugitive from Brazilian justice since 2023.
