Brazil Supreme Court President Edson Fachin Pauses Ethics Code Draft

Supreme Court President Edson Fachin announced he will not push forward the draft of a new Code of Ethics for the Court, leaving the matter to Justice Cármen Lúcia. Fachin said the code, intended to set guidelines for magistrates’ conduct inside and outside the Court, would be presented to the plenary in March, but he chose to wait for the relator’s timetable.

The code aims to increase transparency, limit public statements by judges, and impose post‑service restrictions, but most justices doubt its practical impact. Fachin continues to focus on selecting public‑interest cases for plenary discussion and speeding up monocratic decisions while the ethics code remains on hold.
