Brazil Supreme Court prolongs Jair Bolsonaro's house arrest with no end date
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled on 3 March to extend former President Jair Bolsonaro's house arrest, leaving the period open‑ended. Bolsonaro must continue wearing an electronic ankle monitor, may receive visits only with the minister’s authorization, and is barred from using a mobile phone, accessing social media or recording videos for the internet. Federal District police will guard his residence.
The decision also suspended Bolsonaro’s gun licence and ordered the seizure of ten pistols and shotguns registered in his name, giving his defense 48 hours to hand the weapons to the Federal Police. Moraes noted that no “serious infraction” has been found related to the weapons case, and warned that any breach of house‑arrest conditions could trigger an immediate return to prison. Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years for involvement in an alleged coup plot, had previously been granted a 90‑day temporary house arrest after surgery and is recovering from a bacterial pneumonia.
