Brazil Supreme Court Resumes Bolsonaro Coup Trial Hearings
On 26 June, Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) reconvened the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies accused of plotting a coup after the 2022 elections. The court heard ten defense witnesses linked to former General Augusto Heleno, including General Carlos Penteado, who served as executive secretary of the GSI during the January 8 attacks, and former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, who also testified for ex‑Defence Minister Walter Braga Netto.
Earlier sessions had featured prosecution witnesses and defense testimonies from other Bolsonaro associates such as former Justice Minister Anderson Torres. The hearings are scheduled to conclude on 2 June, after which the parties will submit written final arguments. The STF panel, chaired by Justice Cristiano Zanin, is expected to set a date for the defendants' interrogations, with a judgment anticipated between September and October of this year.
