Brazil Supreme Court resumes hearings on Bolsonaro coup attempt case

The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) resumed on Monday, 26 May, hearings in the criminal case against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven alleged collaborators for an attempted coup and related offenses after the 2022 elections. Defense witnesses slated for testimony include General Augusto Heleno, General Carlos Penteado – former executive secretary of the GSI during the January 8 invasions – and former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, who also testified for ex‑Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto. Earlier sessions, begun on 19 May, featured prosecution witnesses identified by the Federal Prosecutor's Office. Additional defense testimony is set for ex‑Justice Minister Anderson Torres, and Bolsonaro himself is expected to be heard before the hearings conclude on 2 June. After closing statements, written briefs will be filed, and the trial is projected to be scheduled for September‑October 2024.
