Brazil Supreme Court resumes hearings on Bolsonaro coup case

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) resumed hearings on Monday, 26 June, to examine the alleged coup attempt by former President Jair Bolsonaro and eight allies after the 2022 election. The court heard ten defense witnesses, including former GSI chief General Carlos Penteado, ex‑health minister Marcelo Queiroga, and other former officials linked to the Bolsonaro administration.

The hearings, which began on 19 June, follow earlier testimony from prosecution witnesses presented by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. Defense witnesses for former minister Mauro Cid, deputy Alexandre Ramagem, and military figures such as General Augusto Heleno were also called. The STF expects the evidentiary phase to finish by 2 June, after which written final arguments will be submitted and a date set for the trial of the accused. The presiding judges anticipate that the trial of the “crucial nucleus” will occur between September and October of this year.
