Bolsonaro Supreme Court coup trial defense witnesses Brazil

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) resumed hearings on Monday, 26 July, in the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies for an alleged coup attempt and related crimes. The First Chamber handling the trial includes ministers Cristiano Zanin (president), Alexandre de Moraes (relator), Carmen Lúcia, Flávio Dino and Luiz Fux.

Prosecution witnesses were heard beginning 19 July, and ten defense witnesses for General Augusto Heleno are scheduled, among them General Carlos Penteado and former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga. The hearings are set to conclude on 2 June. After testimonies, the parties must file written final arguments within 15 days, after which the relator will schedule the interrogation of the defendants. A judgment on the core part of the case is expected between September and October 2024.
