Brazil Supreme Court resumes Bolsonaro coup trial hearings
The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) resumed hearings on the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies accused of attempting a coup and related crimes. Ten defense witnesses for General Augusto Heleno, including General Carlos Penteado and former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, will be heard. The hearings, which began on 19 July with prosecution witnesses, are scheduled to conclude on 2 June. After the testimony phase, the parties will submit written final arguments within 15 days, after which the relator will set dates for the defendants' interrogations. The court expects to deliver a judgment on the core part of the case between September and October 2024. The First Chamber handling the trial is composed of ministers Cristiano Zanin (president), Alexandre de Moraes (relator), Carmen Lúcia, Flávio Dino and Luiz Fux.
