Eduardo Bolsonaro sentenced to 4 years in prison and barred from office by Brazil's Supreme Court

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) – in a unanimous decision of its First Chamber – sentenced former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of ex‑president Jair Bolsonaro, to four years and two months in prison, to be served in a semi‑open regime, plus a fine of 50 days‑worth of minimum wages. The court also declared him ineligible to run for public office for eight years and ordered the loss of his position as a clerk of the Federal Police.

The conviction was for the crime of coercion in the course of the “trama golpista” proceedings, where the STF judged the attempt by Jair Bolsonaro to overturn the 2022 election. Prosecutors said Eduardo had lobbied the United States to impose economic sanctions – a tariff on Brazilian exports, visa revocations for STF ministers and the application of the Magnitsky law – in order to pressure the court and protect his father.

Eduardo, who has been residing in the United States since early 2025 after losing his parliamentary mandate for prolonged absences, is unlikely to serve the sentence while abroad. He has called the ruling “null,” appealed the decision and publicly asked former U.S. President Donald Trump to reinstate sanctions against STF minister Alexandre de Moraes. The case marks a rare conviction of a high‑profile political figure for attempting to interfere with judicial proceedings.
