Discord ordered to suspend livestreaming in Brazil over child safety concerns
Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has ordered Discord to suspend its livestreaming and video sharing features within the country. The preventive measure gives the company three business days to comply, with a ten-day window to appeal. The decision does not block the entire platform, but specifically targets the ‘Go Live’ functionality and equivalent video tools.
The order follows a tragic incident in July where a 13-year-old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul was reportedly coerced into committing suicide during a live broadcast on the platform. Investigations by the Civil Police and the Ministry of Justice identified a criminal group that allegedly targeted vulnerable minors, encouraging them to engage in self-harm and extreme violence. Six individuals, including five teenagers and one adult, have been detained in connection with the case.
The ANPD stated there is ‘robust evidence’ that Discord failed to implement sufficient safeguards to protect children and adolescents. Discord admitted that while its automated systems detected risk signals during the fatal stream, the event received a risk score of only 0.12, well below the 0.95 threshold required for automatic intervention or human review. The company has expressed disappointment, calling the measure premature, but has submitted a proposal to the Attorney General's Office to enhance user safety and age verification protocols.
