Brazil Suspends On‑Site Passport Printing at U.S. Consulates

Since July 30, Brazilian consulates across the United States – including Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Hartford, San Francisco, Orlando and the embassy in Washington, D.C. – have stopped printing passports locally. The documents are now produced by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil and shipped to the consulates for delivery, a change driven by a surge in demand that outstripped the budget allocated for passport‑booklet material.

In 2024, 195,600 Brazilian passports were issued abroad; the figure rose to 274,000 in 2025 and reached 188,900 in the first half of 2026, with July recording a record 33,000+ requests. The new process can take up to eight weeks, and the union representing Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff warned that limited funding is forcing a reduction in passport issuance, affecting Brazilian citizens who need to travel.
