Brazil tax burden reaches record 32.4% of GDP
Brazil's gross tax burden has reached a record 32.4% of its GDP in 2025, according to revised historical data released by the National Treasury Secretariat. This represents an increase of approximately 2.1 percentage points from the 30.3% recorded in 2023.
The rise is primarily attributed to increased revenue from the central government, specifically through income tax (IRRF), financial operations tax (IOF), and social security contributions. The growth in income tax reflects a rising wage mass, while the increase in IOF is linked to credit and foreign exchange operations.
