Brazil to implement individual livestock traceability by 2032

Brazil is transitioning its livestock sector through the National Plan for Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes (PNIB). The initiative aims to ensure that all cattle and buffaloes circulating in the country are individually identified by the end of 2032, allowing for a complete history of each animal throughout the production chain.

The implementation will be gradual. A key phase in 2026 will focus on upgrading state information systems and integrating regional databases with the national structure. Unlike current methods that rely on property and batch records, the new model assigns a unique identification to each animal to track its movement across different properties.

This shift is intended to enhance sanitary defense by allowing authorities to pinpoint specific animals and locations during disease outbreaks, potentially avoiding broad regional restrictions. Additionally, the move addresses increasing demands from international meat importers regarding animal origin, sanitary security, and production chain transparency, aligning Brazil with global standards.
