Brazil traffic enforcement: High fines for alcohol violations and rest law breaches
Under the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), certain high-severity infractions carry significant financial penalties and administrative consequences. Driving under the influence of alcohol or refusing a breathalyzer test can result in fines of up to R$ 2,934.70 and a 12-month suspension of driving privileges.
In a separate enforcement action, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) fined a truck driver on the BR-101 in Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, for violating mandatory rest laws. After a tachograph analysis revealed the driver had been operating for approximately 24 hours without required breaks, authorities imposed a fine of R$ 130.16 and four points on the driver's license. The vehicle was detained until the mandatory 11-hour rest period was completed.
