Brazil unemployment hits 5.3% amid consumption paradox

Brazil's unemployment rate reached 5.3% in the quarter ending July 2026, the lowest for this period since 2012. While the number of employed people reached 103.3 million and private sector formal jobs hit a record 39.4 million, economic indicators reveal underlying complexities.

Despite the favorable labor market, household consumption fell by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026. This paradox is attributed to the gap between gross income and disposable income. High levels of household debt are impacting purchasing power, with credit delinquency reaching 7.8% for individuals.

Additional labor market challenges include 2.3 million discouraged workers who have stopped seeking employment and a total underutilization of the workforce—including the unemployed and underemployed—of nearly 15 million people. On a positive note, informality among the employed population dropped to 37.5% in early 2026, its lowest level since 2020.
