Brazil labor market shows regional shifts as unemployment hits 5.4%

Data from the IBGE indicates significant economic shifts in Brazil during the second quarter of 2026. The national unemployment rate fell to 5.4%, with 11 states reporting rates below this average. States such as Santa Catarina (2.1%), Mato Grosso (2.2%), and Espírito Santo (2.3%) recorded particularly low unemployment, creating a highly competitive environment for skilled talent, especially in the technology and startup sectors.

Goiás demonstrated strong economic performance, with its unemployment rate dropping from 5.1% to 4.0% in the second quarter. The state's informality rate stood at 36.1%, which is below the national average of 37.4%. Additionally, Goiás reached a historic low in labor underutilization at 8%.

The retail sector in Goiás also saw notable growth, with a 2.5% increase in sales volume during the first half of 2026, surpassing the national average of 1.9%. Expanded retail in the state grew by 7.1%. Key drivers included the sale of fuels and lubricants, which rose by 10%, and a significant 24.1% jump in the sale of vehicles, motorcycles, and parts in June compared to the previous year.
