Brazil updates Bolsa Família and BPC benefit rules
New regulations in Brazil allow families enrolled in the Bolsa Família program to continue receiving payments while their application for the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (BPC) is being analyzed by the INSS. Previously, applicants often had to voluntarily cancel Bolsa Família to prevent the transfer payments from inflating the per capita family income calculation, which could lead to a BPC denial. Under a new agreement between the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, the INSS, the Attorney General's Office, and the Public Defender's Office, the cancellation only becomes effective if the BPC is granted and the family no longer meets Bolsa Família criteria.
In 2026, the BPC provides a monthly payment equivalent to one minimum wage, currently set at R$ 1,621. The benefit is available to elderly individuals aged 65 or older and people with disabilities who meet low-income requirements. Eligibility is determined through a biopsychosocial evaluation, and applicants must maintain an updated CadÚnico and regular CPF status.
Payment schedules for the BPC are staggered based on the final digit of the beneficiary's identification number. For the September 2026 cycle, payments are distributed from September 24 through October 7.
