Brazil updates Category B license rules for electric vehicles

A new law, Law No. 15.503/2026, sanctioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has officially entered into force in Brazil, amending the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The amendment allows drivers with a Category B license to operate certain electric and hybrid vehicles with a gross total weight (PBT) of up to 4,250 kg.

While the standard limit for Category B remains 3,500 kg, this exception specifically targets vehicles with electric or predominantly electric propulsion. The change addresses the higher weight typically associated with electric vehicle battery sets. The National Traffic Council (Contran) may establish additional criteria or complementary regulations regarding the operation of these vehicles.

Beyond driving regulations, the law aims to create financing mechanisms for professional vehicle renewal, providing up to R$ 30 billion in funding to modernize transport fleets, including school and urban vehicles.
