Brazil urbanized area grows 12.3% from 2019 to 2022
Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows that Brazil's urbanized area grew by 12.27% between 2019 and 2022. This expansion added approximately 5,955 square kilometers to the country's urban fabric, an area comparable to the size of the Distrito Federal.
Despite this growth, urbanized areas account for only 0.6% of Brazil's total territory. The distribution of urban space is highly unequal; 50.35% of the national urban area is concentrated within five states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and Bahia. São Paulo leads with the largest urban extension.
Regionally, the Northeast saw the most significant expansion, accounting for 30.22% of the country's total horizontal urban growth during this period. In contrast, the Amazon Legal region covers nearly 60% of the national territory but represents only 14.27% of the urbanized area. The study, based on satellite imagery, notes that approximately 70.66% of urbanized areas are classified as dense.
