Brazil vehicle tax and licensing regulations
In Brazil, the Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA) varies significantly between states because it is a state-level and Federal District responsibility. Each federative unit has the authority to define its own tax rates, calculation bases, and payment conditions within legal parameters. Consequently, two similar vehicles may face different tax amounts depending on where they are registered.
Paying the IPVA does not automatically mean a vehicle is licensed. While the IPVA is a tax related to vehicle ownership, licensing is an annual administrative procedure required for legal circulation. Even if the tax is paid, a vehicle may still be unable to receive its Certificate of Registration and Licensing of Vehicle (CRLV) if there are outstanding fines, administrative restrictions, or other pending debts.
