Brazil warns firms and taxpayers of penalties for missed filing deadlines
The Conselho de Controle de Atividades Financeiras (COAF) reminded regulated sectors, such as factoring companies and jewelers, that the deadline to submit the Declaration of Non‑Occurrence (CNO) for the period 01/01/2020‑31/12/2020 expired on 31 January 2024. Failure to file may trigger a Preliminary Objective Investigation (APO) and substantial fines, impacting the company's reputation and risk profile.
Separately, the Receita Federal announced that individuals who missed the 2026 Income Tax filing deadline of 31 May face a minimum fine of R$ 165.74, with a 1 % monthly interest on any tax due. Non‑compliance can also lead to CPF restrictions, affecting loan eligibility, bank account opening and participation in public contests. Taxpayers are urged to regularise their situation promptly.
