Brazil water utilities offer deep discounts to low‑income customers

São Paulo's water utility Sabesp opened a campaign to renegotiate overdue water bills, granting interest‑free terms and up to 80% reduction of the principal. The program, running until July 31, allows customers in cities such as Presidente Prudente, Bauru, São José do Rio Preto, Itapetininga and Sorocaba to spread payments over 36 months, with options to pay via water‑bill installments, credit‑card or PIX. In addition, the utility provides the Tarifa Vulnerável (78% discount) and Tarifa Social (72% discount) for families meeting low‑income criteria, and a 50% concession for informal settlements consuming up to 15 m³ per month.

In the municipality of Senador Canedo, Goiás, the local government promotes the Tarifa Social de Água, giving qualifying families up to a 50% reduction on their water bills. Eligibility requires registration in the Cadastro Único, with annual renewal through the Sanesc agency. Residents can obtain assistance via the municipal Sanesc office or a dedicated WhatsApp line.
