Brazil wealth concentration: Rio de Janeiro leads in billionaire assets
The 2026 Forbes Brazilian Billionaires list reveals significant regional wealth concentration. The Southeast region dominates the country, accounting for 59.6% of the 255 billionaires and 67.55% of the total wealth, totaling R$ 1.258 trillion. Within this region, Rio de Janeiro leads in total accumulated wealth with R$ 600.8 billion, surpassing São Paulo's R$ 593.2 billion, although São Paulo maintains a higher number of billionaires (95 compared to Rio's 37).
In contrast, the North region is the only part of Brazil without any billionaire representation. The Northeast region holds 22 billionaires with a combined wealth of approximately R$ 63.5 billion. The South follows with 67 billionaires and R$ 292.7 billion.
Individual wealth fluctuations were notable. Ilson Mateus, founder of Grupo Mateus, saw his fortune drop by 54.5%, falling from R$ 7.7 billion to R$ 3.5 billion, coinciding with corporate restructuring. Similarly, the family controlling Grupo Mateus saw their collective wealth decrease significantly. Meanwhile, Rubens Menin saw his wealth decrease by 6.1% to R$ 9.2 billion, yet he climbed to the 36th position in the national ranking.
