Economic dynamics and inequality in Brazil
Overview
Brazil’s economic landscape is characterized by a tension between improving income indicators and persistent structural inequality. While the Gini index reached a historical low of 0.504 in 2024, wealth concentration remains a critical issue. Oxfam Brasil has warned that this concentration is expanding political inequality, as elites may exercise a ‘veto power’ that can stifle democratic processes. Recent data indicates the income of the top 0.01% of Brazilians has grown by nearly 8% annually, a rate five times the national average.
Labor market data from IBGE’s Pnad Contínua shows that approximately 69.1% of the 103.1 million employed Brazilians earn up to R$ 3,242 per month. Geographic disparities are also evident in wealth distribution. According to the 2026 Forbes Brazilian Billionaires list, the Southeast region holds 59.6% of the country’s 255 billionaires and 67.55% of their total wealth, amounting to R$ 1.258 trillion.
Within the Southeast, Rio de Janeiro leads in total accumulated wealth with R$ 600.8 billion, slightly surpassing São Paulo’s R$ 593.2 billion, though São Paulo maintains a higher number of billionaires (95 compared to Rio's 37). In contrast, the North region remains the only part of Brazil with no billionaire representation. Other regional distributions include the South with 67 billionaires (R$ 292.7 billion) and the Northeast with 22 billionaires (R$ 63.5 billion). Individual wealth fluctuations were also noted, such as Ilson Mateus, whose fortune dropped by 54.5% to R$ 3.5 billion following corporate restructuring.
