Brazil winter spending drives consumer debt, hits retailers

A Procon-SP survey of 556 residents in São Paulo found that one in four consumers (25%) incurred debt linked to winter purchases, prioritising warm clothing and medicines while cutting back on leisure activities and travel. The study highlighted a shift in household budgets toward essential items as temperatures drop.

The same pattern of tightened spending is evident across Brazil’s retail sector. In Paraná, shop owners and restaurateurs report markedly lower foot traffic and reduced average spend per customer, with many families opting for home‑cooked meals or limited menu items. Businesses are hoping that school holidays, sporting events and upcoming celebrations will revive sales, but the current slowdown underscores broader consumer caution.
