Barcelona tests solar energy and seasonal shading prototypes

Two innovative solar energy prototypes have been installed at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) Diagonal Nord Campus in Barcelona. The project, part of the city's Climate Plan, aims to test systems that combine photovoltaic energy generation with seasonal shading to improve thermal comfort in urban spaces.

The selected prototypes include ‘OSMA. Ombra Solar Modular Adaptable’, developed by Benito Urban SLU and the Eurecat Technological Center, and ‘Ombra Viva. Refugis actius amb energia solar per al benestar comunitari’, developed by the Institut d’Arquitectura Avançada de Catalunya (IAAC), Esitec Energia SL, and others. These structures will be monitored for one year to evaluate their energy production, robustness, and ability to adapt shading and sunlight exposure to seasonal needs.
