Brazilian Actor Antônio Pitanga Honored with Retrospective Film Showcase in Salvador

A major retrospective of actor‑director Antônio Pitanga opened in Salvador on Friday, August 31. The free program features 29 of his films—feature‑length, medium‑length and short works—presented at Cine Glauber Rocha in the historic centre and at Cine Lankiana, the seat of the Instituto Audiovisual Mulheres de Odun. Curator Thiago Ortman said the showcase highlights Pitanga’s role in Brazil’s Cinema Novo movement and his pioneering presence as a Black filmmaker.

The event includes commentary sessions, debates and a film‑making course, with a special talk titled “Pitanga and his legacy” featuring the honoured artist. On Sunday, August 2, a screened discussion of Pitanga’s own film “Malês” will be held. Organisers plan to take the exhibition to Brasília after its run in Salvador.
