Antônio Pitanga tribute events

In late July 2026, plans were announced for a stage production, “Pitanga, O Musical,” to celebrate the six‑decade career of Brazilian actor Antônio Pitanga. Conceived by actor‑producer Jô Santana and directed by Rodrigo França, the musical is slated to open in Pitanga’s hometown of Salvador in the second half of 2027 before touring São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The same announcement highlighted Pitanga’s starring role in the feature film *Malês*, which will be broadcast on Canal Brasil as part of the Prêmio Grande Otelo ceremony scheduled for 4 August at Rio’s Theatro Municipal.

A few days later, a separate initiative was detailed: a free retrospective of Pitanga’s work beginning on 31 August in Salvador. Curated by Thiago Ortman, the program presents 29 of his films across various lengths at Cine Glauber Rocha and Cine Lankiana, with commentary sessions, debates, a filmmaking course, and a dedicated talk on Pitanga’s legacy. The retrospective will also screen *Malês* on 2 September and is planned to travel to Brasília after its Salvador run.

Together, the announcements illustrate a coordinated effort to honor Pitanga through both a forthcoming musical celebration of his career and a contemporaneous film showcase that revisits his contributions to Brazil’s Cinema Novo movement.
