Brazilian agribusiness faces rising judicial recovery filings

The Brazilian agribusiness sector is facing significant financial pressure, characterized by varying trends in judicial recovery filings. According to a study by Empresômetro (from IBPT), the number of agribusiness companies seeking judicial recovery rose 18.7% over a two-year period, increasing from 875 in 2023 to 1,039 in 2025. This trend has been linked to a 12% reduction in jobs within the sector, with the average number of employees per company dropping from 116.1 to 86.

In contrast, data from Serasa Experian shows a more recent decline in filings. Between April and June 2026, there were 448 judicial recovery requests in the agro sector, a 20.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Experts suggest this recent dip may reflect seasonality or successful debt renegotiations rather than a fundamental improvement in financial health, as high production costs and selective access to credit remain challenges.

Geographically, Mato Grosso led the requests with 23.9% of the national total, followed by Goiás with 18.8%. Other significant contributors include São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná, which together account for approximately 80% of all requests.
