Brazilian anti‑racist education initiatives gain national and international attention

The municipality of Paracambi in Brazil presented its anti‑racist education project at the IV Continental Meeting of Afro‑Latino Studies in Cali, Colombia. The initiative, titled “UFRJ and Law No. 10.639/2003: anti‑racist education in basic schooling, a Paracambi experience,” was showcased by teachers Ângela Brêtas and Denise Francisco Góes and highlighted cooperation between the Paracambi city hall and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) to implement the law that mandates teaching Afro‑Brazilian history and culture.

At the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), the third edition of the “Lélia Gonzalez: ethnic‑racial literacy” training opened on 12 November. Organized by the university’s Inclusion Secretariat, the program aims to develop participants’ ability to identify and combat racism, targeting university staff and other stakeholders during Black November. Officials including secretaries Luciana Dias, Ana Paula Baumann, Maria Meire de Carvalho, and commission members Igor da Silva Coelho and Pedro Cruz attended the launch.

Both initiatives reflect a broader push in Brazil to embed anti‑racist curricula in public education and to train educators as multipliers for racial equity.
