Brazilian Army soldier convicted of racial injury
A former Brazilian Army soldier has been unanimously convicted of racial injury by the 5th Military Judicial District Audit in Curitiba. The incident occurred in March 2025 at the 13th Armored Infantry Battalion in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, during a training period.
According to court proceedings, the altercation began after a meal when the victim struck the accused on the shoulder to get his attention. In response, the accused pushed the victim and used the racial slur “cala a boca, preto imundo” (shut up, filthy black man). The insult was witnessed by other recruits, who testified to hearing the expression.
During the trial, the victim acknowledged that his initial physical contact was an error but stated he was deeply offended by the racial remark. The accused admitted to using the expression, claiming it was an impulsive reaction to being pushed and struck. Although the two individuals later exchanged apologies and resumed a professional relationship, the military justice council proceeded with the conviction.
