Brazil: Banks return over R$ 1 billion to online bettors

Following the implementation of Provisional Measure (MP) 1.394/2026, which led to the closure of several online betting platforms in Brazil, financial institutions have begun returning funds to users. Over R$ 1 billion has already been returned to bettors, reducing the total pending amount from R$ 1.2 billion to approximately R$ 159 million.

The remaining R$ 159 million belongs to roughly 22.5 million bettors across 70.5 million accounts. A significant portion of these balances is very low; approximately 90% of the accounts hold less than R$ 1, and 97% hold less than R$ 10. Banks are scheduled to complete these transfers by October 14. If operational difficulties prevent direct bank transfers, Caixa Econômica Federal will take over the responsibility for processing the payments starting October 14.

While most companies have complied with the data transfer schedule, eight betting companies have yet to provide the necessary information to banks. Consequently, the Attorney General's Office (AGU) intends to take legal action to compel these entities to release the required data. In a parallel effort to combat illegal gambling, the government has blocked over 16,000 illegal betting sites and requested the removal of thousands of digital profiles and groups across various social media platforms.
