Brazilian bishops gather in São Paulo for 88th regional assembly
From 9 to 11 June 2026 the Regional Sul 1 of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) held its 88th Assembly of Bishops for the State of São Paulo at the Mosteiro de Itaici in Indaiatuba. The three‑day meeting brought together 51 bishops and archbishops from 43 dioceses and archdioceses to discuss the creative reception of the General Guidelines for the Evangelizing Action of the Church in Brazil (DGAE).
The opening sessions featured prayers, a reading from 1 Corinthians and a round‑table on how local churches can translate the DGAE into pastoral practice. Topics included sinodality, missionary outreach, pastoral conversion, and the application of the new guidelines to local realities. The assembly also marked the Franciscan Jubilee Year and included reports on pastoral and economic matters, acknowledgments of diocesan anniversaries, and memorials for deceased clerics.
Throughout the event, bishops reflected on the need for humility, listening, and collaborative mission work, emphasizing that the guidelines should become a lived spirituality within Brazilian parishes.
