Brazilian Black Women March Nationwide for Reparations and ‘Bem Viver’
Thousands of Black women marched in cities across Brazil on July 24‑26 as part of the “July of Black Women” (Julho das Pretas) campaign, coinciding with the International Day of Black Women (July 25). In Recife the march began on Friday, July 24, at Parque Treze de Maio and proceeded to Pátio do Carmo, while in Rio de Janeiro thousands gathered in Copacabana on July 26. Demonstrations also took place in Belo Horizonte, Belém, Salvador and other capitals.
Organisers highlighted two core demands: reparations for historical responsibilities of the State and society, and the promotion of the “Bem Viver” societal model that values care, ancestry and collectivity. Speakers such as Clátia Vieira, coordinator of the Rio Black Women Forum, said “first listen to Black women, second put racism as a structural issue.” The Rio march featured banners of the late councilwoman Marielle Franco and her mother Marinete Silva, who attended the event.
Activist Angela Davis spoke at the 24th International Literary Festival of Paraty on July 25‑26, denouncing gentrification and environmental racism in the historic town, stating, “We can feel the presence of ancestors here… the process of gentrification is pushing out poor communities.” Her remarks added an international dimension to the nationwide protests.
