Overview

The fifth edition of the Festival Pacto das Pretas took place from 17 July to 24 July 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo under the theme “Movimento: Mulheres Negras Criando.” About 1,500 Black‑woman leaders convened at the Museu de Arte do Rio on 21 July to discuss corporate governance, diversity, technology and economic empowerment. From 24 July to 26 July, the “July of Black Women” (Julho das Pretas) campaign saw thousands of participants marching in Recife, Belo Horizonte, Belém, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and other capitals. Organisers highlighted two core demands: state‑backed reparations for historic injustices and the promotion of the “Bem Viver” model centred on care, ancestry and collectivity. Clátia Vieira, coordinator of the Rio Black Women Forum, urged listeners to “first listen to Black women, then treat racism as a structural issue.” In Rio, banners of the late councilwoman Marielle Franco and the presence of her mother Marinete Silva linked the protests to her legacy.

Activist scholar Angela Davis addressed the 24th International Literary Festival of Paraty on 25‑26 July, denouncing gentrification and environmental racism in the historic town and adding an international perspective to the nationwide mobilisations. Together, the festival, the coordinated marches, corporate pledges and digital tools illustrate an expanding network aimed at strengthening the political, economic and cultural rights of Black women across Brazil.
