Europe and Portugal hit electric vehicle sales records as Brazil’s electric bus fleet surges

Registrations of battery‑electric cars (BEVs) in Europe surpassed one million units in the first half of 2026, a 33.7% increase year‑on‑year, giving electric models a 25.6% share of new car sales. The growth is supported by subsidies, stricter EU emissions rules and a charging network that now exceeds one million public points, with the Netherlands, Germany and France leading in charger density.

In Portugal, June set a national record with 7,632 new electric‑vehicle registrations, bringing the six‑month total to over 33,000 units – a 33.4% rise from the same period in 2025. The surge reflects strong policy incentives and expanding infrastructure.

Brazil’s electric‑bus market also accelerated sharply, adding 589 newly licensed units in the first half of 2026, a 92.5% jump over the previous year. São Paulo accounted for 99% of these deliveries, and 80% of the buses were domestically produced, highlighting a rapid shift toward large‑scale government procurement of electric public transport.
