Brazil beef (arroba) price climbs in July as supply tightens
The arroba of beef (boi gordo) in the Feira de Santana region closed July at R$330, rebounding from a low of R$320 earlier in the month. Similar firmness was reported nationwide, with most regions seeing modest price gains or stability, as slaughterhouses sought to keep their processing scales despite limited domestic demand.
Calf (bezerro) prices also rose at the end of July, averaging R$467.1 per arroba, even though overall weight averages fell for the third consecutive month.
Pork became more competitive versus chicken, with the special pork carcass trading R$1.58 per kilogram above chilled whole chicken (a 7.84% reduction in the gap from June), but it lost ground to beef, the price difference to beef carcasses narrowing to R$5.17 per kilogram.
Soybean export prices hit record highs at Brazil’s port terminals, with the Port of Santos quoted at R$148 per 60‑kg sack and Paranaguá at R$147, while interior markets such as Canarana offered lower prices around R$114 due to logistics costs.
Brazil’s grain storage capacity remains inadequate, with a structural deficit of more than 130 million tonnes of silo space. The shortfall, especially acute in the Center‑West, forces soy producers to sell quickly after harvest, often at lower prices and with higher transport costs.
Analysts note that while beef prices may stay firm, constrained consumer purchasing power pushes buyers toward cheaper proteins such as chicken, pork and eggs, limiting further upside for the cattle market.
