Brazilian center-right parties declare neutrality for 2026 election
Major center and center-right political blocs in Brazil have opted for neutrality ahead of the 2026 presidential election. Unlike previous cycles where these groups launched their own candidates or formally joined specific coalitions, parties such as MDB, Republicanos, and the União Progressista federation have declared they will not field a presidential candidate.
This shift marks a significant departure from recent political patterns. For instance, the MDB is entering the election without its own candidate or national support for another contender for the first time in 20 years, a situation not seen since 2006. This collective neutrality by the 'Centrão' reflects a strategy of aligning with whoever holds power, similar to historical parliamentary dominance models.
