Brazilian cinema festivals bring free screenings, workshops and voting to Poços de Caldas, Penedo and Pernambuco
The Cine Caravana cultural project staged free screenings and workshops at the CEU das Artes in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais on July 31 and August 1, 2024. Audiences watched the Brazilian short films “Chef Jack: O Cozinheiro Aventureiro”, “Big Bang” and the dystopian feature “Medida Provisória”, while workshops covered interpretation, smartphone filmmaking and artistic makeup. The event is organized by Mamute Produções Culturais with municipal cultural funding and marks the caravan’s fourth edition, having visited 14 cities, held 27 exhibitions and reached more than 3,000 people.
In Alagoas, Cine Penedo offered free public screenings of the films selected for the 2026 Grande Otelo Award between August 26 and September 2, 2024. Viewers could vote for the best film using a QR code projected on screen, and the programme included titles such as “A Queda do Céu”, “Agentes Muito Especiais”, “O Agente Secreto”, “Apocalipse nos Trópicos”, “C.I.C. – Central de Inteligência Cearense” and “O Último Azul”. The Grande Otelo Award is described as the most prestigious prize of the Brazilian Academy of Cinema.
The Mostra Comemorativa do Cinema Pernambucano ran from August 13 to 19, 2024, presenting four classic Brazilian films—“Baile Perfumado” (1996), “Baixio das Bestas” (2006), “Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus” (2006) and “Boi Neon” (2016)—in about 30 venues across the country after an opening on August 6 at Recife’s Cine São Luiz. The showcase celebrates the 30th, 20th and 10th anniversaries of the respective works and includes debates and socially priced tickets to broaden access to national cinema.
