Brazilian cinema highlights feature award-winning film and Vera Valdez documentary
The Brazilian film “A Margem do Rio,” directed by Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho, has released a teaser poster following significant success at the Locarno and Rio Film Festivals. The film, which won five awards at the Rio Film Festival including Best Fiction Feature, follows the story of two men, Izaquiel and Jeremias, amidst themes of religious fundamentalism and violence in Recife. It is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release on January 7, 2027, and will participate in several international festivals, including Chicago, New York, and Thessaloniki.
Additionally, the documentary “A Extraordinária Vida de Vera Valdez,” directed by Fabio Meira, is being showcased at the Mostra de Cinema de São Paulo. The film provides an intimate portrait of Vera Valdez (1936–2026), a pioneering Brazilian fashion figure who worked with icons such as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Elsa Schiaparelli. The documentary explores her career from international runways to her involvement with Teatro Oficina, while also addressing her experiences during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
