The 28th edition of the Festival do Rio, which ran from October 1 to 11, 2026, concluded with several major awards in the Première Brasil section.
‘The Riverbank’ (A Margem do Rio), a queer erotic thriller directed by Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho, emerged as the major winner at the Redentor Awards. Set in Recife, the film utilizes noir tropes and magical realism to explore the oppression of the LGBTQIA+ community by religious fundamentalists. In addition to winning Best Fiction Feature Film, ‘The Riverbank’ earned awards for best cinematography, best sound, and the Felix Award for Best Brazilian Film. Following its success, the film is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release on January 7, 2027, and will participate in international festivals in Chicago, New York, and Thessaloniki.
In the documentary category, Eryk Rocha’s ‘Elza’ was named Best Documentary Feature Film. The production utilizes archival materials and personal conversations to trace the seven-decade career of Brazilian singer Elza Soares.
Other notable winners included Maria Luísa Alves, who received the award for Best Short Film for ‘Santo’, and Gabriel Martins, who was recognized for Best Fiction Direction for ‘Vicentina Pede Desculpas’.
The festival, which featured over 350 films and attracted more than 150,000 attendees, hosted encore screenings of award-winning titles through October 14.
