Brazilian cinema shortlist: Six films vie for 2027 Oscar spot

The Academia Brasileira de Cinema has announced six finalist films competing to represent Brazil in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. The selection process, which began with 15 eligible productions, has been narrowed down to a final shortlist.

The six competing titles are:

• ‘100 Dias’, directed by Carlos Saldanha, depicting Amyr Klink’s South Atlantic expedition. • ‘A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo’, a documentary by Eliza Capai set in Piauí. • ‘A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis’, directed by Rafaela Camelo. • ‘Feito Pipa’, directed by Allan Deberton, a winner at the Berlin Film Festival. • ‘Nosso Segredo’, directed by Grace Passô. • ‘Vicentina Pede Desculpas’, directed by Gabriel Martins.

A selection committee of 15 professionals will meet on September 16 to announce the official Brazilian representative. Being chosen as the national representative does not guarantee an Oscar nomination, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences conducts its own screening process to determine the final nominees.
