Brazilian cities adjust school routines due to extreme heat

Municipalities in Brazil are implementing emergency measures in schools to protect students and staff from extreme heat.

In Corumbá, the Municipal Secretariat of Education has altered school hours for the municipal education network on September 29 and 30. To ensure safety, morning sessions will end at 9:30 a.m., afternoon sessions at 3:30 p.m., and full-day programs at 12:00 p.m. Schools have been instructed to prioritize hydration, suspend physical activities that increase heat risk, and maintain cool, ventilated environments.

In Dourados, following temperatures reaching 38.2°C with a heat index of 40.3°C, the Municipal Secretariat of Education has advised schools and early childhood education centers to reduce intense physical activities. Educators are encouraged to replace strenuous exercises with low-intensity activities, such as board games or theoretical studies, in shaded or covered areas. Schools are also directed to ensure easy access to water and improve ventilation in classrooms.
