Brazilian school disruptions from environmental and health要因

Overview

Educational institutions in Brazil have faced various disruptions due to environmental conditions and public health concerns.

In late September, municipalities such as Corumbá and Dourados implemented emergency measures to combat extreme heat. Schools adjusted schedules, shortened sessions, and suspended strenuous physical activities to protect students and staff from high temperatures and heat indices.

By mid-October, disruptions shifted toward disease outbreaks and air quality issues. In Porangaba, a daycare center temporarily suspended operations due to an outbreak of hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Simultaneously, in Manaus and surrounding areas like Autazes and Nova Olinda do Norte, in-person classes were suspended because of ‘terrible’ air quality. This poor air quality was driven by smoke from heat spots in the interior of Amazonas, with fine particulate matter concentrations reaching 150.5 µg/m³.
