Brazilian cities intensify fumacê spraying to curb dengue

The municipal health secretaries in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraíso do Tocantins, Brazil, commenced intensive ultra‑low‑volume (ULV) fumacê operations to suppress adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya. In Campo Grande, crews sprayed the neighborhoods of Pioneiros, Jardim Paulista and TV Morena on 17 March, advising residents to keep doors and windows open so the insecticide reaches hiding spots.

Paraíso do Tocantins launched a heavier UBV campaign across 18 districts, operating from 05:00‑08:00 and 17:00‑20:00. Officials highlighted the measure as an emergency tool, stressing that it does not replace the need for community action to eliminate standing water and other breeding sites.
