Brazilian cities launch major health facility expansions

The municipality of Goiânia inaugurated a new Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the Lorena Park residential area, investing R$ 3.2 million in a 750‑square‑metre facility that includes consult rooms, dental offices, a pharmacy and vaccination spaces. Mayor Sandro Mabel announced the opening as the first step of a broader plan to build 31 additional UBSs and eight Emergency Care Units (UPAs) across the city, with total health‑infrastructure spending projected at nearly R$ 500 million.

In the neighboring state of Tocantins, the city of Gurupi began the "Opera Gurupi" program to clear the waiting list for elective surgeries. The initiative, funded with R$ 11 million from a parliamentary amendment, will prioritize patients already registered in the SISREG system and cover 24 types of low‑ and medium‑complexity procedures. Health secretary Ricardo Silva said the program will start with pre‑operative consultations and will call patients in chronological order of their wait time.
