Brazilian cities mobilize emergency response for severe weather
Municipalities in Brazil are mobilizing emergency resources to prepare for severe weather, including heavy rains, strong winds, and potential tornadoes.
In Marília, over 200 municipal employees were deployed to support preventive actions following forecasts of storms and possible tornadoes. The city activated 16 municipal schools as shelters, providing assistance to 78 families living in high-risk or vulnerable areas. Support measures included the distribution of 2,000 mattresses, pillows, and blankets, as well as prepared meals and health professionals stationed at support points.
In Santos, more than 1,000 professionals from drainage, maintenance, Civil Defense, and traffic engineering teams have been mobilized. The city is preparing for intensified rainfall and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, which may coincide with high tides and complicate water drainage. Preventive measures include reinforced waste collection to prevent clogged drainage systems and the preparation of emergency shelters for residents in risk zones.
