Brazilian cities roll out GPS tracking for taxis and signal‑advance detectors to boost road safety
The municipality of Petrolina, Pernambuco, has mandated the installation of GPS tracking devices on every licensed taxi. The equipment, provided free of charge by VipSeg Brasil, must be installed by August 24, with non‑compliance potentially leading to administrative proceedings that could revoke taxi permits.
In Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, the public transport agency EPTC will expand electronic traffic enforcement by installing three new signal‑advance detectors at key intersections. The devices will monitor red‑light violations and excess speed, complementing existing safety measures and providing real‑time alerts through the Waze app and the city's ObservaMOB portal.
